All good things come to an end and sadly, the same is true of Matt Hardwick’s presence on the trance scene. A few months ago Hardwick announced that he would be winding down his trance career to concentrate on his day job as a lawyer. It’s very possible that ‘In My Mind’ could be his final production, so let’s hope he can go out on a high! The release will be spread over two parts with the first part featuring the original mix, dub mix and a Thomas Datt remix. The second will feature remixes from Gary Maguire, Sly One vs Jurrane and a Thomas Datt dub. Looks like Discover have pulled out all the stops on this one!
Part One
In My Mind (Original Mix)
To be honest, male vocals in trance are a bit hit and miss for me. They descend in to cheesiness in the blink of an eye so I am always wary of them. I am, however, a fan of Senadee and his last single ‘Speed of Light’ was a corker. This time around Senadee’s vocal starts as an understated murmur of the chorus. In the promo text we were told of a Blue Monday-esque groove, which I can definitely hear in the bassline which is the most dominant element throughout the track’s buildup and eventual drop. There is a pluck which is also reminiscent of New Order, so good call on that one.
Arriving at the chorus, we are hit with the hook, showcasing Senadee’s range – that’s some excellent falsetto! The main chorus is powerful and uplifting, “we won’t care if it brings us down” over that little uplifting pluck again. Senadee’s voice soars and I couldn’t help but do a weird “desk dance” when we hit the drop. If you like chilled out but intricate production then this is the mix for you.
In My Mind (Thomas Datt Remix)
Where the original mix was more bass driven, Datt’s remix is typical of his atmospheric and uplifting style. I love the feel of this track and how he doesn’t follow the usual formula, instead including chilling, ethereal effects alongside more driving production elements. I wouldn’t be surprised if he made an announcement that all his music was actually composed inside a glacier. Senadee’s vocal shines, making this an emotional and unique remix, definitely worth 8 minutes of your time.
This pack also featured an instrumental remix and a radio edit.
Part Two
In My Mind (Gary Maguire Remix)
Fans of Gary Maguire will know to expect an upfront, dancefloor-ready track. The first few bars actually reminded me of ‘Sunlounger – Lost’, that was until a big, booming kick blasted in to the arrangement. Much like the original mix, Maguire’s mix is very bass driven, though we are treated to plenty of vocal hits and FX throughout. There is no breakdown to speak of here, but the chorus sits so well over that chunky bassline and sidechaining that it gives the track a more energetic feel. I would love to hear this remix on a big soundsystem.
In My Mind (Sly One vs Jurrane Global Rework)
Keeping the 138 dream alive, Sly One vs Jurrane have become to go to guys for true Discover-style remixes. This time around though, they have dropped the tempo to 128bpm – strangely though the track still keeps its energetic feel. Fans of vocal chops will delight at this remix as the guys have been pretty creative in working with Senadee’s voice. Like Thomas Datt, SOvJ are true melody makers and always add a delicious top-line and hands in the air chorus. ’In My Mind’ is no exception and the boys have delivered again.
In My Mind is forthcoming on Matt Hardwick’s “Kill The Lights” sublabel of Discover. Part One hits Beatport as an exlusive on September 12th, with Part Two making an appearance a week later on 19th September.
