Reviewed: Ryan Mendoza – Focus

This week saw the release of ‘Focus’, the latest offering from US based producer, Ryan Mendoza. Already notching up the YouTube views, the track is available on Tone Diary, Marcus Schössow’s imprint of the mighty Spinnin’ label.

I asked Ryan Mendoza what he made his bass from, the answer being that it comprised one part bulldozer and one part lawnmower. That about describes the attitude of this track! ‘Focus’ takes us on a high-energy rollercoaster ride, weaving its way around stabbing synths, monstrous drops, buzzing basslines and dynamic perc patterns. When approaching that first drop I felt like if it didn’t deliver I might cry with disappointment.  Luckily it blew my ears off and caused me to say the F word out loud, much to the surprise of others around me, and myself.  Nothing like a bit of trance to unearth your inner Tourette’s sufferer!

Sometimes if a track is good and above 136, I might say that it will work well on the dancefloor, without ever really being certain that it will. However, I can confidently say that ‘Focus’ will go straight for the jugular, unceremoniously blast the dancefloor in to oblivion and then not return its calls the next day. Emotional melody seekers need not apply.
