Productive and successful for more than a decade, Italian native artist, producer, DJ and multi-talent EDX first hit people’s radars in 1994 with various mix tapes that within weeks had circulated around the globe. With his new found fame EDX quickly climbed up the ladder of recognition with labels and producers asking him to sprinkle his remix magic touch onto their releases.
EDX’s remix CV is impressive to say the least with remixes on the likes of Deadmau5, Mary J Blige, Bob Sinclar, Axwell, Armand van Helden, Steve Angello, Roger Sanchez, Laidback Luke, Armin van Buuren, Kool & The Gang, Kaskade, Funkagenda, Lauryn Hill, to name but a few.
MARCIE:You played the Red Bull Riverside stage at Electric Zoo on Sunday. Did you have anything special planned for the set?
EDX: Well I played many new tracks including some tracks that have been featured on my radio show in the past as well as a few from my upcoming album.
MARCIE: Did you enjoy your summer residency in Ibiza? Will you be back next year?
EDX: My summer residency in Ibiza was absolutely amazing! Space is one of the best clubs in the world and it is always great returning to the island every month. I will definitely be back next year. By then I hope to have my own No Xcuses nights as the brand grows more.
MARCIE: You started out mixing cassette tapes back in 1994 for the then famous club, Tarot in Switzerland. Do you still have your cassettes?
EDX: Yes. Actually I started to DJ as a HIP HOP DJ even a few years earlier. I switched in 1992 to electronic music, and yes I have them still :)
MARCIE: What mentors or tracks do you remember from that early part of your career as being particularly influential for you as a developing DJ?
EDX: I really loved always to see Laurent Garnier. He was one of my biggest idols back in the day, super good vibe and DJ. From the perspective of a technically perfect DJ, I really liked as well the British breakbeat hype headlined by DJ HYPE. It was just amazing how he took control of the crowd at warehouse raves.
MARCIE: Is there a specific story behind the composition of your new single, “Falling Out of Love”, and/or a special meaning of the song for you personally?
EDX: I really liked the song by Sarah [Mcleod]called He Doesn’t Love You (Hook N Sling Vocal Mix). Sarah has a very unique voice. Love her!
MARCIE: How long has your artist album been in progress?
EDX: The album is going to be ready soon. We are now working on the release pretty soon. You will love the album. I am really happy with the full tracklist and collabs.
MARCIE: Were there ideas you loved when you first started your album, but aren’t fond of anymore?
EDX: Actually when I started to work on the album I had so many collabs in the pipeline that I was not able to follow [through with them] all, the time was just running too fast. Some collaborations have been postponed to the future. I believe the album overall is a very good statement for an EDX music lover.
MARCIE: When you are working on an album, but also releasing singles and remixes at the same time, how you decide which of your new ideas you should reserve for your album, and which you should release earlier on other tracks?
EDX: I always try to give the best to every production. I am trying to not act with a protectivism concept on the sound. I want always to have the best possible for each thing.
MARCIE: What do you do if you have writer’s block?
EDX: That doesn’t usually happen to me, haha.
MARCIE: You posted on twitter recently about scoring a goal playing soccer. What position do you play?
EDX: Actually I played soccer 4 days a week when I was much younger, until the age of 16. I always was a top first line player left, center right. :)
MARCIE: You just released the 31th episode of your No Xcuses (ENOX) podcast. How has it evolved since the first episode? In other words, how did you decide on your branding angle as you expanded to FM radio and launched No Xcuses residencies worldwide?
EDX: The show has really developed since the beginning. I try to include as much new material I can and I really like to use a lot of tracks that I also am playing in my live sets. We launched the concept first with the radio show on SiriusXM and then began moving to FM stations around the world. As the audience grew more and more, we were able to approach venues about the idea of launching No Xcuses residencies since we had the whole package, brand, show, merchandise, etc. I think it will only keep growing and I am really happy about the direction so far.
MARCIE: What’s the best movie you saw on an airplane this year?
EDX: Black Swan
MARCIE: If you could trade places for one week with any artist, living or dead, who would you choose?
EDX: This is actually not that easy to answer. Shall I pick a girl? haha… Maybe I would love to be Louis Armstrong?
