Sameer Mohamed Interviews Jason van Wyk

“Hailing from Cape Town, South Africa, Jason van Wyk (born 10 January 1990) is rapidly building himself a name in the worldwide Electronic Dance Music scene.”

Signing his first single at the age of fourteen, having his club debut as a DJ at the age of thirteen, with years of experimentation with music production and writing music, Jason has found his ground in music that works well for him and for the listeners who have praised his productions.

2010 looks to be Jason’s busiest year yet. With two brand new tracks, “Always” & “Once Again”, signed to Tiesto’s renowned Black Hole Recordings label and a bunch of new originals, collaborations and remixes in the pipeline…

Interviewed Exclusively For Beatsmedia – 16th April 2010

Sameer Mohamed: Word on the street is you play a variety of instruments, are you classically or formally trained, what instruments do you play?

Jason van Wyk:
Well my mother is a classical pianist and teacher, so I’ve been doing piano for a couple of years now. Funny thing is though, I taught myself, she’s always been there to help, but I’ve never had any actual piano lessons, I just did my own thing, learnt a bit of theory and that was that. Other than piano I play drums, been playing since I was 8, I play a bit of guitar now and then too and I’ve dabbled in bass.

Sameer Mohamed: With a tune featuring on the recent Cosmic Gate`s “Back 2 Back Vol. 4″, did you ever have that “sit back feeling” and go “oh wow!” ?

Jason van Wyk:
Yes actually, when I first signed the EP (Always & Once Again) to Black Hole in December last year, they mentioned that they were putting Back2Back 4 together, I kept thinking to myself how awesome it would be to get on there, and about a week later I was told Once Again was included! Was quite a nice moment : )

Sameer Mohamed: A stem in thought, September Rain featuring Marcie” is on the upcoming ISOS 8 mixed by Richard Durand, care to share with us the events that lead to your tune featuring on this acclaimed series?

Jason van Wyk:
Black Hole approached me a few months back asking if I had something for the compilation, I was busy finishing the track off around that time, so once it was complete I submitted it, didn’t hear back for about a month, and then got an email the other day confirming it was on, and that’s the story!

Sameer Mohamed: On the production note, care to divulge with us the tools, software and hardware in your studio?

Jason van Wyk:
Nothing to fancy, it’s a custom built home studio centered around a very powerful PC, with 2x Dell 20” HD displays, running ProTools 8, Reason together with Record, Ableton Live, a bunch of plugins, about 300gigs of samples, a few midi controllers for different things, KRK monitor speakers, Digidesign and M-Audio sound cards and a bit of outboard gear: mixer, synths, preamps etc.

Sameer Mohamed: 2010 is already on a stellar start, perhaps some teasers as to your upcoming plans for the year?

Jason van Wyk:
Well there’s “September Rain”, which besides being on ISOS 8, will be out as a single on In Trance We Trust in the next few months. Another new single is coming up on Black Hole’s new sub label First State Music – Managed by, you guessed it, First State! Really looking forward to that one… I’ve just completed a remix of C-Systems ft. Van Dresen – Embrace, which will be out on ITWT pretty soon. Some gigs have been booked for the coming months, hopefully some more will come up for the rest of the year. But as far as productions go, you can expect a lot this year!

Sameer Mohamed: On the lighter note now, your favorite cartoon character?

Jason van Wyk:
How about comic character? … Superman!

Sameer Mohamed: Being a South African featuring on Isos 8: South Africa, do you perhaps see it as an inspiration to the local trancers to actually start their hand at producing?, personally I believe you are quite the catalyst in the rankings of creating up and coming producers.

Jason van Wyk:
We’ve actually got loads of Psy Trance producers from Cape Town who have made it big internationally, but as for the more European Trance sound there aren’t many guys doing it. I think it will catch on though with all these styles crossing over, the scene is definitely getting bigger, it’s taking a while, but it’s getting there
