With the DJMAG poll looming around the corner it got me thinking of what the outcome for 2010 will be. The current ranked DJ’s for last year are HERE
Now my question is how does someone like Armin get to the no1 spot to begin with, is this because people are voting because he deserves this position or are they merely voting because they are fans and love everything ARMIN? Now if the votes are going off the number of fans Armin has, as you can imagine the fan base is huge, doesn’t this mean that DJMAG is a popularity contest rather than a talent one -For some odd reason I was naive enough to think that this poll was based on talent more so, but it seems not- I mean let’s say for example: Sander van Doorn has been absolutely amazing this year -which he has- and is well deserving of spot no1 -as are many others-, but the fan base of Armin is so large that Sander doesn’t get in, -disregarding who deserves it most, get my point? – could he or any other artist begin to actually compete with Armin’s fan base, if not then how will this poll ever change?
Not to mention the fact that DJMAG has a big influence on the sound within our clubs, how? well if a club owner spots an artist in the top 10 or top 30 he is more likely to get a gig, -popularity brings more fans through the door in turn, KerChang- which means those under a certain number will be declined based on the poll rankings. -based on the above it seems very unfair to me-
However, shouldn’t DJMAG now start thinking of new ways to change this poll, should we even have a poll? I mean Armin -example not digging at Armin here btw- has been no1 now for how many years, furthermore wouldn’t it be better to see the DJMAG poll pull in newer artists, wouldn’t it be much more exciting to see a big shift take place every year which in turn will birth newer sounds within our clubs, in addition open doors for more DJ’s to come through? -that choice lies with you-
Possible idea from a friend of mine: To put something constructive forwards, a simple change could be made, where rather than measuring only the votes for the current year, DJMAG instead measures the difference in an artists votes between last year and this. Thus if somebody has gone from unknown to 10,000 votes they are ranked highly, if somebody has dropped 10,000 votes from last year then they are notably further down the charts – the precise manner would perhaps have to be more complex, but measuring the change in the scene, rather than the overall picture at one time may be indicative of what’s the true state of the chart.
For all those who would like to vote for your favourite DJ, the poll begins on Wednesday 28th July 2010, but before you vote this year why not think carefully about who you really feel deserves the top spot, always choose from your heart, do not follow the crowd, and remember the artists need your honesty!
